The Reflex Test Part 1, was written by myself not long ago. I have
actually written two versions of this game, one which uses very dull
colours and uses a very small font to display the questions and your
answers and one, very much the same as this game which uses large,
clear and colourful numbers. If you would like a copy of this new
version you can write to me with a blank disk and the return postage
and I will gladly send it to you.
NOTE: There is no difference in the scoring methods of this new
version, nor any difference to how I select the various
questions.

This text file is divided into several sections each of which deals
with a specific topik. These sections are,
1) Introduction.
2) Instructions.
3) Hints and Tips.

INTRODUCTION
------------
This game was written by myself, Jason Lowe. It was written in
Aztec C with a 20Mb hard disk and 3Mb of ram. The C source code to
this program is around 1600 lines, which excludes all include files.
The digitized speech you hear every time you run this program is
myself. It was digitized with a GVP sound sampler and edited with
Digital Sound Studio.
This program tests you basic mathematical skills. My previous
program "The Mathematical Reflex Test" tested your addition,
multiplication and subtraction skills. This program tests your
algebraic, division and fractions skills.
I am now in the process of collecting names and high scores for
this game, and also "The Mathematical Reflex Test". I have a high
score list where everyone who plays this game or sends me there
name and final percentage mark are placed in the high score list
no matter how good or bad there final percentage mark maybe.
In the future I will write one, maybe two more Reflex Tests
along the same lines as this one. I will then collect marks in
all categories for any one particular person. I will then take
the average of all of these final percentage marks and create
a further high score table. But this will all hinge on whether or
not I can dig some more ideas out of my head for further versions
of "The Reflex Test".
Anyhow ENJOY this game, as alot of my freinds have.

INSTRUCTIONS
------------
This is a very simple game, which tests your skills with
algebra, dividing numbers or adding and subtracting fractions.
Once you have loaded up this game you will be presented with
a menu which asks which area of mathematics you wish to be tested
on. Once you have selected this you will be presented with blank
rectangles, a flashing RETURN sign and also what topik you have
selected. Here we press RETURN to start.
Once you have started, you must try to answer as many questions
correctly within the shortest possible time frame.
You are timed from when the first question pops up and the timing
stops when you have answered the last question.
In the category ALGEBRA you must solve 18 algebraic equations.
The answer to each equation is a 1 digit number. Once you have
entered your answer the next equation will pop up, and so on.
In the category DIVISION you must answer 30 division questions.
The questions range from simple questions like 16 divided by 4 up
to harder questions, like 108 divided by 9. The answer to each
question is a 1 digit number.
In the category FRACTIONS you must answer 18 questions. In each
question you must either add or subtract two fractions. When you
enter your answer, you enter the numerator first then the
denominator. Every answer to every fraction contains only 2
numbers. ie, One for the numerator and one for the denominator.
You need not simplify the fractions in order to achieve a correct
result.
Once you have finished answering all your questions in whatever
category you have selected, they will be marked. The questions you
answered correctly will be stamped with a "CORRECT" and the ones
you answered incorrectly will be left alone. This way you can see
what questions you answered incorrectly.
You will then be given a final mark based on how quickly you
answered all the questions and how many questions you answered
correctly. This final mark is a percentage which ranges from zero
up to one-hundred.
I would greatly appreciate it if you would write to me with your
final percentage marks, no matter how good or how bad they may be,
so I can add them to my lists. For more information on how to submit
your marks read section 4 in this doc file.

Hints and Tips
--------------
Here are a few hints and tips for all players.
1) For parents with children who lack basic mathematical skills
such as knowing there times tables, or simply adding two
numbers together in their head can use this game as a skill
builder. You, the parent can say to your child, "If you
achieve a mark of 70 percent or more in Multiplication,
I will give you ten dollars". This would be a big incentive to a
child of around 11 years of age, and if they have the determination
to win the ten dollars off you, you would probably see them at the
computer trying to beat 70 percent, and in the process learning
essential mathematical skills.
2) For those of you trying to score some huge score, here are a few
tips on how to do this,
1) Attempt to answer more questions correctly, rather
than achieving a better time.
2) Use the numeric keypad rather than the other set of
numbers, and pratice playing this game WITHOUT looking
at the keyboard.
3) Get someone else to read out the questions for you,
while you concentrate on entering the answers.
3) This game, when played for a few hours can really build up your
proficiency in located various keys on the keyboard without
looking for them.

How to submit your scores
-------------------------
When submitting your scores to me, you must submit your NAME,
CATEGORY, TIME TAKEN, CORRECT RESPONSES and finally your FINAL
PERCENTAGE MARK. If any of these five are not counted for I may
decided not to include your mark.
It wouldn't be a bad idea to print the following chart out to
which you can easily record your marks. GOOD LUCK.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
| | | Correct | | |
| Name | Category | responses | Time | Final Mark |
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
| eg, Jason Lowe | addition | 27 | 96.452 | 58.564% |
